Powerlevel had that experience, and that formed an unchangeable impression of the hobby in his mind. When I told a coworker of mine that I am a power leveling player, he rolled his eyes and said "ugh roleplaying." A similar thing sometimes happens when WoW gamers encounter or talk about roleplayers in WoW powerlevel. Stories about negative experiences with roleplayers tend to travel faster than positive ones, and they create an impression the roleplayers are crazy fanatics even when actually only a few of them are.

I asked him if he had something against roleplaying, and he told me a story about a group of roleplayers he knew who used to live as roommates in the same apartment and roleplay for long stretches of time together whenever they got the chance. Gamers play to start a brand new powerlevel in a RP server. I have been looking powerlevel around the net about what US-RP WoW realm has the greatest and friendliest role-playing community, but I have fail until now.

Another thing that sometimes stops people from roleplaying and powerlevel, even if they get an invitation to join a powerlevel group, is a sense that roleplaying is something other people do, especially if they have an impression of roleplayers as people who totally lose themselves in their stories and forget their real lives in powerlevel.
